Connecting your home router with Wi5 network

Posted: January 9, 2011 in Gadgets

As you might have heard Zylog Wi5 is a wireless broadband service available in many Indian cities. Even though it is wireless, they will install a small signal receiver (modem+router) in the home roof tops for better signal reception. If you already have a home router to connect all your internet hungry devices, you might be perplexed as how to make them work together. Here is how the situation looks…

Wi5 to local router connection

The following instructions will help you to make it happen. What we are trying to do is connecting a router to another router…

Wi5 WLAN Router:

  1. Make sure you are able to connect to the internet directly without your router in the picture
  2. Open the Wi5 router’s admin page (192.168.1.254 by default)
  3. Go to the LAN Interface under TCP/IP settings and make sure DHCP server is set in server mode
  4. Updated DHCP client range wide enough based on how many devices you want to connect to your home router

Home Wireless Router:

Almost all the routers will have atleast 4 LAN ports to connect other devices to the network and a separate LAN port for connecting the ISP’s modem. Since Wi5 does not actually have a separate modem but instead is a modem+router, how you connect the both is bit different…

  1. Connect the Wi5 router to your home router in one of the 4 LAN sockets
  2. Login to your home router and disable its DHCP server. There can be only one DHCP server in a network and since we have enabled Wi5 router’s DHCP server, this is not needed.
  3. Restart the router if needed/prompted

This should do.

    Dear Sir,

As said prescribed in the picture, I did the connection, but when I open the home page of the router, it asks for a username and passeord. I entered it as admin, admin and admin,no password. But either of them worked. Please provide the username and password for the router’s admin page

    • Sudhakar says:

Chandra, every router has different default username & passwords… check your router manufacturer’s website for it…

I too have the same problem, the wi5 WLAN router at 192.168.1.254 asks for username and password, which i dont know, can you tell the default username and password for it,, it must be same for all their routers, i have already tried many combinations but it didnt work….please reply ASAP

    • Sudhakar says:

Arun, as I mentioned before in the previous comment of this post, it is router manufacturer and model dependent. I googled for my Linksys router WRT600N to find that the username is blank with default password “admin”.

  3. bhooshan says:

Hi Sudhakar, Do you happen to know how to change the wi5 login password? There doesn’t seem to be an option.

    • Sudhakar says:

Booshan, I guess you have to contact their customer care to do it. There is no option in their site for that.
      {Sorry for the delayed reply} :)

pls help i want to login my wi5 router but i m unable to do that,it only says Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.254. pls help

    • Sudhakar says:

Vivek, If your wi5 modem is not configured to the IP address I have given, connect your wi5 modem cum router to PC directly (without any wireless router in between) and open the terminal to run ipconfig command to find the correct IP address of it.
